Here at Hills Ford, we tackle these myths daily. So, in this article, we’ll clear up five of the most common EV myths:
Myth #1, EVs regularly catch fire – The fact is that only 0.2% of car fires in the UK are EVs and tradition petrol and diesel cars are 20 times more likely to catch fire than an EV. It was reported back in 2023, that the fire which started the Luton Airport car park blaze, was an EV, again this was untrue, it was a diesel Range Rover.
Myth #2, EVs are too expensive – On the face of it, you may pay a slight premium for a new EV car over their more traditional counterparts. But there are great incentives to purchase a new EV Ford, with 0% APR available, deposit allowances of up to £2,500, 5 years free servicing and 8 years or 100,000 miles battery warranty.
For less than £5, you will be able to charge your Ford EV up to 389 miles on a single charge at home, overnight with Intelligent Octopus Go. And with only 20 moving parts compared to 2,000 in a traditional vehicle, total ownership cost will be significantly reduced.

Myth #3, There is nowhere to charge an EV – The average journey in the UK is around 6 to 10 miles. The likelihood is that you will charge your car at home, negating the need to charge your car when you are out and about. However, if you do travel a bit further afield, the amazing Ford SYNC® will help you plan a route to one of the 71,000 charging stations currently in the UK, where in less than 30 minutes you can charge from 10% to 80%.
Myth #4, EV batteries don’t last – EV batteries are specifically developed to last, that’s why you’ll find many Ford EV models with warranties of up to eight years – so you needn’t panic next time you see a misinformed headline about EV batteries being expensive to maintain.
Myth #5, EVs still require tanking up with unsustainable fuels – In March, 67% of the power to the UK grid came from zero-carbon sources. And as we progress to the UK ZEV mandate of 2035, this figure will continue to climb.
These are just some of the myths our EV experts handle in the dealership on a daily basis.
